Twin brothers, Conor and Ryan Ashe, knew from a very early age that music was in their future. Native to Naperville, IL, both brothers immediately took a liking to the silvery, seductive sounds of the Chicago blues. With a degree of classical training on the double bass, they both purchased their first electric guitars at the age of 12.
Knowing very little about the instrument, they began to seek inspiration from the rock and folk gods of old. Such early influences included: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and The Band. It was astonishing that such a diverse collection of sounds would end up nurturing the style and spirit of what would eventually become Common Allies.
The Ashe brothers would continue practicing and performing live together throughout their high school years under a series of names. This dedication to the craft would eventually win them a slot to open for Huey Lewis and the News at a local festival in their hometown.
While attending the University of Iowa, the Ashe brothers became involved in the underground Iowa City music scene. Experimentation from bands such as: Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, and The Beatles would guide the direction of their live performances and songwriting.
Post graduation, the brothers began working with a plethora of professional musicians in an effort to share their inspired sound with the world. They came up with the name, Common Allies, to encompass inclusiveness and diversity; both in their target audience and original music.
Common Allies continues to perform throughout their home state and plan to take their music on the road. More opportunities have arisen in the recent years, including a Wentz Hall performance in which they filled in for Art Garfunkel, and the future is bright. Keep your eyes and ears open. They might be crashing a venue near you.
